Curling up with Fiction


It is a good thing to curl up with a book for a little while before bedtime. I like James Russell Lowell, saying, "Solitude is as needful to the imagination as society is wholesome for the character." We all need to spend some time alone; people who cannot bear their own company for a time have thin souls."

After a hullabaloo of months of moving, I'm in the mood to just be still. Go nowhere. Productivity thrown out the window. I'm in the mood to read, and not much else. 

Perhaps after resting in May,  June will bring renewed vigor for life. We'll see. 

Right now it's books - fiction only. 

Just finished: Eleanor and Park, by Rainbow Rowell

Reading now:  The Chosen, by Chaim Potok

On my nightstand:  Walking Across Egypt, Clyde Edgerton, The Magnolia Story by Chip and Joanna Gaines, and Hotel on the Corner of Bitter and Sweet, by Jamie Ford

First of all, I love the Lowell quote, it really resonates with me. I finally got a library card after living without one for two years. Living outside of city limits means we have to pay each year for a card and until recently I have not had much margin for reading. One could argue, after another winter with a house under construction, indoor dogs and recovering from another broken ankle I still do not have margin and should get my house back in order. The ankle needs rest in between chores so I like to prop my foot up and read a chapter or two. I recently finished Fallen: Out of the Sex Industry and Into the Arms of the Savior. It was heartbreaking and enlightening. I would recommend it. Currently I am reading Jen Hatmaker's 7. It is a good read, but we already live pretty simply and "green" so it is not so motivating. Next up is The Small Business Start Up Kit as we are turning my husbands hobby into a business that will hopefully keep him occupied in retirement.

Hi Kathy, I got my first library card when I was about 7 years old, I still remember that it was pale blue cardboard, and I was so thrilled! I'm still thanking Ben Franklin for the idea! (I think he came up with the public library notion?). And hooray for your husband looking toward keeping busy during retirement - great idea! Thanks for stopping to say hello.
